This Vittsjö bookcase hack is one of my favorite Ikea hacks, simply because it is so simple. A few coats of spray paint and contact paper and you can take a basic bookcase and create something beautiful to display some of your favorite books and objects.
I chose to paint my bookcase gold, but the sky is the limit on what fun color you could paint it.
Here are the supplies you need and simple steps to carry out the Vittsjö bookcase hack.
WHAT YOU NEED
- Ikea Vittsjö Shelf Unit
- Gold Spray Paint
- Marble Self Adhesive Film
- Scissors or Exacto knife
- Plastic drop cloth or cardboard
STEP ONE
Put together the bookcase according to the instructions (as far as Ikea instructions go this one is pretty simple). Don’t put the shelves on yet.
STEP TWO
Lay it down on cardboard or plastic and spray with gold spray paint. I recommend 4 light coats to get it all. Let dry fully.
TIP: You can do a final coat with Amy Howard Bright Idea Lacquer for a little extra shine and durability.
STEP THREE
Cover the top and bottom particleboard with marble contact paper – this is the one I like to use.
Tip: I left all of my middle shelves clear, but you can always mix it up and cover one of the glass shelves in the marble
STEP FOUR
Put all of the shelves in the bookcase. On the top shelf, you want the marble side facing down.
STEP FIVE
This is the fun part – you get to fill it. Have fun laying out just the way you want it.
This is a quick easy hack that you can easily complete on a weekend morning!
