Is everyone asking you what they should binge-watch next, or do you get depressed when you finish the last episode of a series? I think we are all in the same boat.
As a family, together we watch The Office. We have seen every episode several times, but it never gets old! Aside from that, we all like very different shows. Personally, I am obsessed with shows set in a small town, and since they keep making them I don’t think I am the only one. Here are some of my favorite shows set in a small town.
If you want a Quirky Small Town
Hart of Dixie – This might be one of my favorites! It takes a New Yorker and plops her down in Bluebell, Alabama (because you always need a fish out of water in a small town). The show is as crazy as it is charming, full of love triangles and town gossip. You can’t help but fall in love with even the unlikable characters.
If you are looking for something light and fun then you have 4 delicious seasons to dive into. It was just taken off Netflix, but you can find it on Amazon Prime.
Gilmore Girls – I mean who wouldn’t want to live in a town called Stars Hallow? Chances are you have already watched this … but it’s so good you should probably watch it again. I didn’t watch it when it was originally on TV, but later on Netflix, so I got to fully binge it.
Like Hart of Dixie, Gilmore Girls is filled with colorful characters and is bound to draw you in for all 7 seasons plus the bonus movie. The show is set around Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, an endearing mother-daughter duo trying to make it on their own. All with the help of the small town, showing it really does take a village. You can find it on Netflix
Northern Exposure – This might be one of the original quirky small towns! I remember watching it in college. Northern Exposure is set in Cecily, Alaska with a New York doctor sent to a small town (seeing a theme here?). The characters were and fun and zany and a pleasure to get to know. This is also where we got introduced to the swoon-worthy John Corbett before he headed over to Sex and the City. It really is a classic if you feel like going down memory lane.
Sweet Magnolia’s – There is only one season so far, but it is an excellent way to escape for a bit. Set in the small town of Serenity, South Carolina it follows the life and loves of three best friends who grew up together. It will leave you feeling good, but with a little drama mixed in. After the last episode, you will be wondering if there will a season two, and the answer is “yes”. Netflix
If you want MURDER IN A SMALL TOWN
Murder She Wrote – I don’t know what it is, but I LOVE Murder She Wrote! Growing up it was the only show we were allowed to watch during dinner, it was on Sundays (after 21 Jumpstreet)! It combines two of my favorite genres – mysteries and small towns!
Renowned author Jessica Fletcher seems to find dead bodies all over the world, but the best murders she solves take place in the quaint town of Cabot Cove, Maine. It is full of a crazy cast of characters and just about every actor has appeared on it at one time or another. You can find ALL 12 seasons on Peacock.
Aurora Teagarden Murder Mysteries – This is basically a modern Murder She Wrote with Hallmark charm and a younger mystery solver. If you get lucky you may find yourself in the middle of a marathon on the Hallmark Murder and Mysteries channel.
If you want A Small town with an Edge?
Virgin River – Clear your weekend, put on something cozy, and dive in! This show follows the formula of having the main character escape from the big city after a life-altering event to a small town. It even has the same small town doctor as Hart of Dixie.
It’s a little darker (but not too dark) than some of the previous shows but definitely steamier! It takes place in Virgin River, in Northern California. The main character Mel Monroe is a nurse trying to get over a huge loss, and of course, there is a sexy leading man, Jack, to create some sexual tension and a love triangle. After finishing the first two seasons, you will be counting the days until season 3. Netflix
THE RANCH – I think I am probably partial to this one because it takes place in my home state of Colorado. The show is set on a cattle ranch in Garrison, Colorado. I would say it is a comedy/drama with lots of grit. It has an all-star cast featuring Ashton Kutcher and the sexy Sam Shepard (he’s still got it!) There are 4 seasons to keep you busy. Netflix
A FEW OTHERS
While I am sure I will binge them at some point, I still haven’t watched Dawson’s Creek or Friday Night Lights, (I know, I know) … but they are definitely much-loved shows set in a small town.
Hopefully, you will find something on this list that you haven’t watched yet or might want to watch again.
I will never grow tired of a show set in a small town, so if there is one I have missed please let me know!!!
